Majid, and the truck
Sky Carpet Cleaners is Majid. He has been cleaning carpet in Northern Virginia for over a decade, and he still does the work himself. The person who walks your house and sets the scope is the person who shows up with the machine, and the person who calls you after it dries.
That is not a marketing position, it is why the business is built this way. A plan made by someone who will never touch the wand is a guess, and guesses get corrected once the furniture is already moved.
It also means he is not selling anyone else’s schedule. If a job needs an extra hour of spot work, he takes the hour.
Why rugs as well as wall to wall
Most of the work is still wall to wall carpet, and it always has been. Rugs came in through the front door of the same houses. In Great Falls and McLean especially, there is a hand knotted piece in the dining room or the front hall of a house that also has four bedrooms of carpet, and the customer wants one person to handle both.
He could have kept saying no. He did not, because he had seen what happens when a rug is treated like carpet: dyes run, fringes gray out, and cotton foundations stay wet and sour. Learning to do rug work properly was better than watching it done badly.
What he will not do
- He will not wand wash a wool or silk rug flat on your floor. Water that goes into a rug on a hard surface has nowhere to go.
- He will not promise a stain will come out before he has seen it, and he will not promise it after either if it is dye, bleach, or sun fade.
- He will not start work on a scope you have not heard out loud and agreed to.
- He will not soak a drapery panel that is going to shrink or drop its lining.
- He will not add a protector, a deodorizer, or a pet treatment to a job that does not need one.
- He will not clean carpet that is delaminating, rotted at the tack strip, or held together by the pad. Cleaning it makes it worse, and no amount of extraction brings back a backing that has already let go.
The walkthrough, and the word no
Every job starts with a free walkthrough of about fifteen minutes. He identifies the fiber, checks the backing and the seams, looks at the doorways and the turns for worn yarn tips, tests a hidden spot for dye movement, and asks what has already been put on the marks you want gone. By the end the scope is agreed out loud, anything that will not come out has been pointed out first, and nothing starts until you are happy with the plan.
Sometimes the walkthrough ends with him telling a customer not to do the job at all. Twenty year old builder grade carpet with a crushed pad will look better damp and then look the same as before by Thursday. A rug with active dye bleed and dry rot in the foundation can be washed, but not made whole. Saying that out loud loses a job and keeps a customer, and after this long in Haymarket, Loudoun County, and everywhere between, most calls come from people who were told the truth once.
He would rather explain what he cannot fix than be the second cleaner you call to fix what the first one did.

It also means the schedule is finite, so booking a few days ahead is usually smart in busy months.
Why did the business add rugs instead of sticking to carpet?
Because the rugs were already in the houses. Customers with four bedrooms of carpet often have a hand knotted piece in the dining room, and they want one person handling both. Rugs also punish mistakes in a way wall to wall carpet does not, so learning to wash them correctly was better than watching them ruined by someone treating them like carpet.
What kind of work do you turn down?
Carpet that is delaminating, rotted at the tack strip, or only holding together because of the pad. Drapery that will shrink or drop its lining if it gets soaked. Rugs with active dye bleed that a customer wants guaranteed to come back perfect. In each case cleaning either makes it worse or cannot deliver what the customer is picturing.
What happens if you say something is not worth cleaning?
You hear it during the free walkthrough, not once the hoses are already run through your front door. Old builder grade carpet with a crushed pad will look better while damp and go back to how it was within days. If that is the situation, Majid says so and the job does not get booked. It loses him the work and it is still the right call.
Do you use subcontractors or day labor?
No. The work is done by the owner, which is why the plan agreed at the walkthrough is the plan that gets carried out. A subcontracted job is scoped by one person and performed by another who is paid to move fast, and that gap is where rushed extraction and skipped dry passes live. Keeping it owner operated removes the gap rather than managing it.
How far do you travel?
Across Northern Virginia: McLean, Tysons, Great Falls, and Herndon in Fairfax County, Ashburn, Sterling, Leesburg, and Purcellville in Loudoun County, and Haymarket and Gainesville in western Prince William County. If you are just outside that footprint, call anyway and you will get a straight answer about whether the trip makes sense.
Can one person clean a whole house in a day?
Yes, in most Northern Virginia houses. A typical three room job runs 45 to 90 minutes, and a full floor of bedrooms with stairs and a hallway fills a morning. What stretches a day is heavy spot work, furniture that has to be emptied before it can be moved, and long hose runs from the street. Booking the whole house in one visit is usually faster than splitting it across two.
