Carpet Cleaning
This is the everyday job: rooms, stairs, hallways, and the traffic lanes that show first. We tell you what will come out and what will not before the hose comes off the truck.
The job we do most days
Most of what dulls a carpet is not a stain. It is fine grit ground down into the base of the yarn, plus body oil and cooking residue that catches airborne dust and holds it in place.
The job is to pull the grit out, break the oily film, and rinse the fiber back to neutral so it stays clean instead of graying again in three weeks.
What the visit looks like
Budget 45 to 90 minutes for a typical three room job, longer with stairs and heavy lanes.
- We walk the carpet with you and point out anything that will not come out.
- Dry vacuum the areas being cleaned, because dry soil leaves far more easily dry than wet.
- Move the furniture we move (see below) and pad the legs.
- Pre spray the lanes and spots, then let the product dwell 10 to 15 minutes.
- Agitate with a groomer so the pre spray reaches the base of the pile, not just the tips.
- Rinse and extract with truck mounted equipment, covered in detail on our hot water extraction page.
- Groom the pile back up, set air movers in closed in rooms, and towel the doorways.
Furniture: what we move and what we leave
We move sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, dining chairs, and light end tables, then set them on blocks or foam pads until the carpet dries. We do not move beds with the mattress on, china cabinets, aquariums, pianos, wall units, or electronics on stands. That is a damage line, not a laziness line.
Lanes, spots, and what does not come out
Lanes between the kitchen and the family room take the most abuse, and they are where the difference shows. We give them a longer dwell and a second slow pass. Filtration soiling, the dark line along baseboards and under doors, is airborne soot pulled through the carpet edge. It improves and it rarely disappears.
Permanent means permanent. Bleach spots, dye stains from drink mixes and medication, urine that has burned the backing, and worn yarn tips do not come back with cleaning. Old pet accidents need pet odor treatment rather than surface cleaning, since the source sits in the pad.
Drying and what to expect after
Carpet is damp, not wet, when we leave. Typical dry time is 4 to 6 hours with the HVAC fan running, up to 8 or 10 in a humid August week in Haymarket or a basement with no airflow. Clean socks, not bare feet, and no shoes until it is dry. A few spots may wick back up from the backing overnight. That is normal, and we come back and touch them out.
How to prepare, and how often to clean
- Pick up toys, cords, shoes, and pet bowls, and clear clutter out of any closet you want done.
- Empty a curio or a bookcase if you want the carpet under it cleaned.
- Name the product used on any spot you have already treated.
A household with kids or a dog wants cleaning every 12 months, and every 6 to 9 months on the main lanes. Two adults with a shoes off habit can stretch to 18 months.

Questions we get about this
How long will my carpet take to dry?
Four to six hours in a normal house with the HVAC fan set to on. Expect eight to ten in a humid stretch of summer, in a finished basement, or in a closed room with no airflow. We groom the pile and towel the doorways before we leave. Ceiling fans and cracked windows help. You can walk on it in clean socks right away, but keep shoes off until it is dry.
Do you move the furniture?
We move sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, dining chairs, and light end tables, and we set them on blocks or foam pads so damp carpet does not stain the legs. We do not move beds with the mattress on, china cabinets, aquariums, pianos, wall units, or electronics on stands. If you clear a curio or a dresser ahead of time, we will move the empty piece and clean under it.
Will cleaning make my carpet look new again?
It will look clean, not new. Cleaning removes soil, oil, and most spots. It does not rebuild yarn walked flat at a doorway, restore a pile that has lost its twist, or bring back color the sun took out of a strip by the window. You will hear which parts of your carpet are dirty and which are simply worn before any equipment comes off the truck.
Should I vacuum before you arrive?
You do not have to. We dry vacuum the areas we clean as part of the job, because dry soil leaves far more easily dry than wet. What genuinely helps is picking up toys, cords, shoes, and pet bowls, and clearing floor level clutter from closets you want done. That saves us time on the clock and keeps small items from getting moved to the wrong room.
Why do some spots come back a day later?
That is wicking. A spill that soaked into the backing and the pad rises back up the yarn as the carpet dries, and the spot reappears looking lighter than before. It is common with drink spills and pet accidents. Call us and we will come back and treat it. Repeat wicking usually means the contamination is in the pad, which is a different job than surface cleaning.
How often should carpet be cleaned?
Every twelve months for a household with kids or a dog, and every six to nine months on the main traffic lanes if the house sees a lot of foot traffic. Two adults with a shoes off habit can go eighteen months. Many carpet manufacturers require periodic hot water extraction to keep the warranty valid, so hold on to the paperwork we leave with you.
Is what you use safe around kids and pets?
The products are standard professional carpet chemistry, rinsed out with a mild acid rinse so the carpet finishes near neutral pH rather than sticky and alkaline. Keep children and pets off the carpet while it is damp, mostly so it is not resoiled and so nobody slips on the transition to hard floor. Once dry, the carpet is ready for normal use. Tell us about allergies and we will adjust.
Can you clean an apartment or a move out?
Yes, and move outs are a large part of what we do. Empty carpet cleans faster and dries faster, so a move out is the quickest version of this job. Tell us if a landlord or property manager needs a written record of what was cleaned and we will leave one. If the carpet is worn through at the doorways or has bleach spots, cleaning will not restore it and we will tell you plainly.
