Intervals that hold up

How Often Carpet Should Be Cleaned

The interval question gets a different answer from every company, which is fair reason to distrust all of them. Here is how we arrive at ours, and what would make us change it for your house.

The short answer, then the variables

The honest answer to how often carpet should be cleaned is about every twelve months for a quiet adult household, and about every six months once pets or small children are involved. That is a starting point rather than a rule, and the variables that move it matter more than the number does.

Most of the carpet we see replaced early in Northern Virginia was not worn out by walking. It was worn out by grit that sat in the pile between cleanings.

What actually moves the interval

  • Pets. Dander, skin oil and the occasional accident. Roughly halve whatever interval you started with.
  • Young children. Food on the floor, and heavy traffic across the same three feet of hallway.
  • Shoes indoors. The largest single source of abrasive soil. Street grit is mostly quartz and sand, and it cuts fiber like sandpaper.
  • Light colors. Not dirtier, just more honest. Cream and pale gray show lane soil months before a mid tone does.
  • Allergies or asthma. Carpet traps what the air drops, which helps only if the trap gets emptied on a schedule.
  • Warranty language. Many carpet warranties require professional cleaning on a stated interval, commonly twelve to eighteen months, with receipts kept.

Why waiting until it looks dirty is late

Carpet hides soil until it is loaded. Fine grit falls past the tips and settles at the base of the yarn, out of sight, where it grinds against the fiber every time somebody walks the lane. By the time a hallway reads visibly gray, the pile has been sanding itself for months, and part of that dullness is abrasion rather than dirt. Cleaning takes the soil out, but it cannot polish a scratched fiber.

Do not trust your eye. Dampen a folded white towel, press it into a traffic lane with your weight behind it, and read the towel instead.

What vacuuming does

Vacuuming is the most valuable thing you do for your floor, and it removes most of what lands there by weight: grit, sand, hair, crumbs, dander. Three to five slow, overlapping passes over a lane do far more than one fast pass. Nothing we do on the truck replaces it.

What vacuuming cannot do

A vacuum moves dry soil. It does nothing about the oily film that body contact, cooking and shoe residue leave behind, and that film glues the next round of dust in place. It cannot rinse. It will not touch filtration lines at the baseboards, and it cannot reach soil already bonded at the base of the yarn. That is the gap hot water extraction exists to close.

How often carpet should be cleaned, by household

  1. Adults, no pets, shoes off at the door: every twelve to eighteen months.
  2. Adults with one dog or cat: every nine to twelve months, lanes and stairs sooner.
  3. Children under school age: every six to nine months.
  4. Pets and children together: every six months, with pet odor removal handled as it comes up rather than saved for later.
  5. Allergy household: every six months, plus weekly vacuuming with a sealed machine.

Stairs and the four feet inside each exterior door take the worst of it and can be done on their own. In Herndon and Sterling we clean a lot of townhouse stairs at half the interval of the bedrooms, which is what we would do in our own house.

Holding the interval

How often carpet should be cleaned depends on what happens between visits, which we cover in keeping carpet good between cleanings. Mats at every door, shoes off, a vacuum that is actually emptied, and spots handled the day they happen will stretch any schedule. Neglect all four and even six month carpet cleaning is playing catch up.

Questions we get about this

Is once a year enough if the carpet still looks clean?

For a quiet adult household with mats at the doors and shoes off, once a year is a sound schedule. Looking clean is not the test, since soil sits at the base of the yarn long before the tips go gray. Press a damp white towel into a hallway lane with your weight behind it. What comes up on the towel is a better guide than what your eye reports.

Does frequent cleaning wear carpet out faster?

No, and the opposite is closer to the truth. What wears carpet is grit grinding against the fiber under foot traffic. Proper extraction removes that grit and rinses the fiber back to neutral. The damage people blame on cleaning almost always comes from over wetting, harsh chemistry left in the pile, or aggressive machines used on the wrong fiber, not from the frequency itself.

How often should stairs be cleaned compared with the rooms?

Roughly twice as often. Stairs take concentrated traffic on a small area, the tread noses take the brunt of it, and hands and pets add oil that bedrooms never see. Many of our customers have the stairs, the upstairs hall and the entry done partway between full visits. It is a short appointment and it makes the whole floor look consistent.

What does my carpet warranty actually require?

Read the paperwork, because the wording varies by manufacturer. Many require professional cleaning by hot water extraction on a stated interval, often every twelve to eighteen months, and many require you to keep the receipts. Homeowners who clean only with a rental machine, or who cannot produce records, sometimes find a texture retention or stain warranty denied years later.

We take our shoes off at the door. Can we stretch the interval?

Yes, and it is the single most effective habit there is. Shoes carry in sand, grit and oil from driveways and parking lots, all of which is abrasive. A shoes off household with good entry mats can often move from twelve months to eighteen. Add a dog or a toddler and that advantage disappears quickly, because the soil source moves indoors.

How often should I vacuum between professional cleanings?

Traffic lanes, entries and stairs need vacuuming two or three times a week. Bedrooms and low use rooms are fine weekly. Technique matters as much as frequency: slow overlapping passes, three to five per strip, with the beater bar set correctly for the pile height. Change the bag or empty the bin when it is half full, because suction drops well before a machine looks full.

Does carpet make allergies worse?

Carpet holds particles instead of letting them circulate, which is helpful as long as the trap is emptied. Neglected, it becomes a reservoir that gets stirred up every time someone walks across it. An allergy household usually does best with vacuuming several times a week using a sealed machine with good filtration, plus professional cleaning about every six months.

We are selling the house. When should the carpet be cleaned?

Clean before the listing photographs are taken, not after the first weekend of showings. Fresh carpet photographs noticeably better, and buyers read a clean floor as a well kept house. Allow four to six hours of drying before anyone walks it in shoes, and mention any repair or stretching needs during the walkthrough so nothing is discovered later during inspection.

Have a look at it in person

Walkthroughs are free and take about fifteen minutes. We agree the scope together and point out anything that will not come out before a hose comes off the truck. Over a decade in Northern Virginia and that has not changed.
