Curtain and Drapery Cleaning in Haymarket, VA

A two story family room panel lives two different lives: sun above, dogs and traffic below. The top half is usually the fragile part even though the bottom half looks worse.

Why the Top Half of a Panel Fails First

Most curtain cleaning in Haymarket involves a two story family room window, so start there. Take a long panel off one of those windows and lay it on the floor and you will often see a horizontal line about halfway down where the color changes. Above the line the fabric has been in direct light for years, because nothing shades the upper glass. Below it, the roof overhang, a deck or the fence line have kept the sun off for most of the day. Same panel, same age, two very different fabrics by the time we get to it.

That is the first thing we look for on any request for curtain cleaning in Haymarket, and it matters more than the visible dirt at the bottom. Faded fabric is weak fabric. A panel with a strong lower half and a papery upper half has to be handled from the bottom, supported along its length when it comes down, and never gripped by the header the way you would grip a sound panel. Get that wrong and the tear happens at the top, out of reach and impossible to hide.

Tall Glass, Deep Rooms and What Sits Below It

Newer Haymarket houses put a lot of glass in the family room and a lot of life underneath it. The sofa faces the window, the dog watches the yard from the slider, and the panels are the tallest soft surface in a room where everything happens. Floor length is the standard here, which means the hem is on the floor, in the traffic, all day.

What a large dog does to a floor length panel

  • A darker band at coat height where oils from the fur transfer with every pass
  • Nose prints and saliva marks on the panel nearest the slider, usually the leading edge
  • Mud carried up the hem from a wet yard, which dries and grinds into the weave
  • Hair driven deep into the bottom of the fabric rather than sitting on the surface
  • Chewed or pulled hems on the panel a young dog can reach

Hair and surface soil come off with mechanical work and a proper vacuum stage. Coat oil is the one that needs chemistry, because it is greasy, it holds dust, and it darkens fabric in a way that looks like shadow until a clean panel hangs beside it. If there is odor as well as soil, that is a separate problem from cleaning and it gets treated as one.

Tie backs are worth a mention while we are down at that level. Where a panel is held open with a cord or a fabric band, the fabric under it is protected and the fabric beside it is not, so a cleaned panel sometimes reveals a stripe of original color that was hidden all along. That is not a cleaning fault. It is what the whole panel looked like before the sun got to it, and it is a useful measure of how much color has actually gone.

Getting a Sixteen Foot Panel Down Safely

Family room windows here often top out well above head height, sometimes with a transom above the main opening. Removal on a tall window is a two person operation: one working from a padded rolling platform, one taking the weight of the panel from below so the header never carries a hanging load while it is being released. Panels are gathered, not dropped, and carried folded over an arm rather than dragged past the hearth.

Where a panel is sound and the fabric allows it, we skip removal entirely. On rod cleaning with a low moisture method deals with dust, allergen load and light soil, and the room has its panels back within the hour. Drapery cleaning in Haymarket only goes off site when the fabric is silk or wool, the lining is unknown, the coat oil is heavy, or there is genuine odor in the cloth.

Allergens in the Room Where Everyone Sits

Floor length panels in a family room hold more than dust. Dander, pollen tracked in on paws and shoes, and fine fiber shed from the carpet all settle into the weave, and drawing the curtain puts a portion of it back into the air. Households with a child who reacts to animals notice the difference after cleaning more than anyone else does, which is the most useful argument for putting panels on the same schedule as the carpet rather than treating them as decoration. In practice, drapery cleaning in Haymarket once a year in the family room and every second or third year in the bedrooms keeps the load manageable without anybody having to think about it.

Booking in 20169

Sky Carpet Cleaners is owner operated. Majid has been cleaning fabric across Northern Virginia for over a decade and comes out to look at the job himself, free and with nothing owed either way. We work Haymarket, VA in 20169 and the surrounding parts of Prince William County. Panels and floors in the same room usually get done together, so carpet cleaning in Haymarket is on most of these visits, and where a dog has left more than hair behind, pet odor removal in Haymarket belongs on the list before anything else is attempted. The sectional that faces the window is normally due for upholstery cleaning, the entry and stairs often want carpet steaming, and loose wool under the dining table does better through rug cleaning off site. We cover Gainesville and Purcellville on nearby routes. Phone (540) 628-5274, mention the height of the family room window and how many animals live in the house, and we will tell you what the visit involves.

Questions we get about this

Why is the top of our family room curtain a different color from the bottom?

Because only the top has been in the sun. The roof overhang, a deck or the fence line shade the lower glass for most of the day, while the upper section takes direct light year round. The result is one panel with two ages of fabric, and the faded upper half is the weaker of the two even though it looks cleaner.

Is a faded panel dangerous to take down?

It needs care. Faded fabric has lost strength, so a panel with a papery top cannot be gripped by the header the way a sound one can. We support it along its length while releasing it and take the weight from below. Tears on these panels happen at the top, which is the one place you can neither hide nor repair invisibly.

There is a dark band across the curtain at about knee height. What is it?

Almost always oil transferred from a dog's coat. Every pass along the panel leaves a little, and because the oil holds dust it darkens gradually until it reads as a shadow. Hair comes off mechanically, but this band needs the right chemistry to lift. It is one of the more satisfying things to clean because the change is obvious.

Can you clean the panels without taking them off the rod?

In most Haymarket homes, yes. If the fabric is sound and the lining is known, a low moisture method on the rod handles dust, dander and light soil, and the room looks normal again within the hour. Panels leave only for silk and wool, unknown or aged linings, heavy coat oil, or real odor sitting in the fabric.

How do you reach the top of a two story family room window?

From a rolling platform with padded feet, with a second person on the floor supporting the panel as it releases. Nothing gets leaned against the glass and nothing is dropped from height. Panels come down gathered rather than hanging, and they are carried folded over an arm so a hem never drags across a hearth or a hard floor.

Will cleaning the curtains help with allergies in the family room?

It helps, and people with a sensitive child in the house tend to notice it most. Floor length panels hold dander, pollen carried in on paws, and carpet fiber, and drawing the curtain puts some of that back into the air. Cleaning them on the same schedule as the carpet keeps the whole room's load down rather than half of it.

Our dog chewed the bottom of one panel. Can that be dealt with?

Cleaning will not repair it. A chewed hem needs a sewing repair, and a workroom can usually rehem a panel if there is enough length to lose, though the pair then hangs slightly shorter than before. We will clean the set and tell you honestly whether the damaged panel is worth repairing or whether the pair reads better replaced.

Do you cover the whole Haymarket area?

Yes, 20169 and the neighboring parts of Prince William County. Tall family room windows take longer than the window count suggests, since setting up and moving a platform is most of the labor. When you call, mention the ceiling height and whether the furniture under the window can be moved, and we will book a realistic amount of time.
