There are fewer doors to break up movement, so foot traffic funnels into a small number of predictable paths and hits the same yarn thousands of times. A closed plan spreads that load across several rooms. An open one concentrates it.
Practically, hot water extraction in Haymarket on an open floor is done in zones defined by use rather than by walls. The lanes get pre spray at full strength, agitation and two or three passes until the recovery water stops running dark. Expect six to ten hours to dry to the touch on a lower level with movers running, and resist putting rugs or furniture back before then.

Will the dark path through our family room come out completely?
Part of it will and part may not. Soil comes out entirely. Crushed pile improves with grooming and the wand. Abrasion, where grit has scratched the fiber so it scatters light, does not respond to any cleaning method. In a newer house most of what you see is still soil, so expect a large change. I will give you a specific read before starting.
Why do traffic lanes look darker even right after cleaning?
Because scratched fiber reflects light differently than the undamaged yarn beside it. It is an optical effect from physical wear, not residual dirt. You can confirm it by looking at the same area from the opposite direction, since the difference often shifts or disappears depending on the angle you view it from.
Our main floor is one open space. How do you decide where to clean harder?
By use rather than by walls. I identify the paths people actually walk, which in an open plan are few and very consistent, and treat those at full pre spray strength with multiple passes. The furniture islands and dead corners get a lighter application and one pass. There is no reason to over treat carpet nobody stands on.
Does the basement carpet need the same cleaning as upstairs?

How long should we keep the dogs off the carpet afterward?
Until it is dry to the touch, four to eight hours on the main floor and longer in the basement. Paws on damp carpet undo a good part of the work, since fiber that is still wet grabs whatever crosses it. Confining them to a hard floor area for the afternoon is the simplest way to protect the result.
We had the carpet cleaned before and it looked dirty again within a month. Why?
Residue, almost certainly. If the alkaline pre spray was not rinsed out, it stays faintly tacky in the fiber and pulls soil from every shoe and paw that crosses it. The lanes go first because they take the most traffic. A proper rinse that returns the fiber to a mildly acidic pH prevents it, and it is the step most often skipped.
Can you clean under the sectional in the family room?
